How to Buy a Diamond Engagement Ring: 10 Tips from INKLUZ Experts

An engagement is a moment full of emotions – and great responsibility. By choosing an engagement ring, you are not just looking for a beautiful object. You are looking for a symbol of feelings that are meant to last a lifetime. So how do you choose one that will truly delight her? The INKLUZ guide will help you find the answer.

1. Get to know the 4Cs – the basis of diamond grading

4C stands for: Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight. This classification system, created by the GIA, allows for a reliable quality assessment and comparison of stones.

  • Color – a scale from D (colorless) to Z (distinctly yellow or brown). Diamonds in the D–F classes are considered the most valuable.

  • Clarity – determines the number and placement of inclusions (internal features) and external blemishes. Range: from Flawless (perfectly clear) to Included (with visible flaws). At INKLUZ, we mostly offer diamonds in the VS1–SI1 classes.

  • Cut – the most important factor affecting brilliance. A perfect cut ensures brilliance, fire, and the scintillation of light. INKLUZ exclusively offers diamonds with an Excellent or Very Good cut.

  • Carat (weight) – more weight means larger size and rarity, but the quality of the stone is just as important as its size.

? Tip: Consider which of the 4Cs are your priorities. This will make it easier to choose the perfect stone within your budget.

2. Understand shapes and cut styles

Shape is the outline of the stone as seen from above. The most popular is the round brilliant, but there are also so-called fancy shapes: oval, pear, cushion, heart, marquise, radiant, or emerald.

  • Brilliant cut – the brightest, 57 or 58 facets, maximum brilliance.

  • Step cut (e.g., emerald cut) – elegant lines, "hall of mirrors" effect. Better showcases the color and clarity of the stone.

  • Mixed cut (e.g., radiant) – a combination of two styles: brilliance and geometric structure.

? Tip: Brilliant cuts hide imperfections and yellowish tints better, while step cuts expose clarity and color – choose consciously.

3. See how the stone looks in different lighting conditions

A diamond looks different in daylight, fluorescent, and spot lighting. Jewelry is often presented under spotlights that enhance brilliance. Before making a decision, ask to see the ring in natural and home light – that's where it will be seen most often.

4. Choose the right precious metal

At INKLUZ, we work with four types of metals:

  • Yellow gold – classic, warm, pairs best with colored gemstones.

  • Rose gold – romantic, subtle, looks beautiful with G–J color diamonds.

  • White gold – rhodium-plated, perfectly fits colorless stones (D–F).

  • Platinum – the most durable, naturally white, hypoallergenic, exclusive. Perfect for high-end diamond settings.

? Tip: If you choose colored gold, it is worth setting the diamond in white prongs to avoid distorting its color.

5. Choose the right setting

The stone's setting affects both the look and security of the ring.

  • Prong setting – classic, exposes the brilliant, available in 4 and 6-prong versions.

  • Bezel setting – surrounds the stone with a metal collar, ideal for active women and stones with sharp edges.

A setting can also add grandeur to the ring, e.g., by surrounding the center stone with small diamonds (halo).

6. Consider side stones

  • Three-stone ring – a symbol of the past, present, and future.

  • Halo – a circle of small diamonds around the main stone, amplifying the brilliance effect.

  • Pavé or channel setting – diamonds set into the band of the ring.

  • Colored gemstones – e.g., sapphires, rubies, or emeralds as a personal accent.

7. Discover styles and motifs that could charm her

  • Vintage – inspired by Belle Époque, Art Deco, with details like milgrain, engraving, and old cuts.

  • Modern vintage – a modern interpretation of retro style.

  • Toi et Moi – two stones symbolizing a union (e.g., diamond + sapphire). This motif was already popular in the 18th century. In 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte gave his future wife Josephine a Toi et Moi ring with a diamond and a sapphire – today it is one of the most romantic engagement symbols.

  • Roses, hearts, symbols of love – timeless and bold motifs.

  • Boho rings – non-standard forms, black diamonds, open constructions.

  • Stacking rings – sets of engagement and wedding rings that create a cohesive composition.

8. Choose the right size

Use a ring she already wears (measure its diameter), ask a close person for help, or contact us – we will help estimate the size. If necessary, we offer free resizing after the engagement.

9. Trust a jeweler who knows their craft

At INKLUZ, we don't just sell jewelry. We help you make good decisions, educate you, show the differences between stones, and our team has knowledge backed by years of experience.

10. Demand a certificate of quality

Every diamond offered by INKLUZ comes with a certificate: GIA, IGI, or HRD. This is a guarantee of authenticity, origin, and quality. This document is also necessary for the valuation or insurance process of the jewelry.

At INKLUZ, you can:

  • Buy a ready-made ring from our collection,

  • Order an individual design with any stone,

  • Match the details to your partner's personality and style.

✨ Jewelry is emotion captured in form. And an engagement ring from INKLUZ will be its symbol forever.
